A complete migration plan, full redirect mapping, staging assessment and launch support are quoted separately.

  • Priority pagesWe assess important service, category or product pages, using any search and enquiry data you share to understand their contribution.
  • Current technical setupA focused check looks at page access, redirects, internal links and other visible issues that the new website should address.
  • Planned changesYour proposed domain, platform, content and URL changes help us identify the areas needing further investigation.
Build SEO into the move

Know what needs to carry across before the old site disappears.

A new website changes more than its appearance. Important content, page addresses, navigation and tracking need deliberate decisions, particularly when several teams are involved.

  • Keep valuable pages accounted for

Identify the content people already find, reference and enquire through, then decide what happens to each important page.

  • Give developers requirements they can implement

Document URL destinations, page settings and checks while the new website is being built.

  • Catch problems while they are easier to address

Review key templates before launch and test the live website against the agreed plan.

Before, during and after launch

What our Website Migration SEO service includes.

Your migration plan reflects what is changing, the size of the website and the people implementing it. We agree the responsibilities, access, launch arrangements and monitoring period before work begins.

Before the move

Understand the existing website and decide what the new one needs to retain.

  • Define what is changing

A migration brief records the domain, platform, content, structure and URL changes involved. It establishes the launch dependencies and the decisions that need resolving before development progresses.

  • URL inventory and important pages

Your URL inventory brings together available crawl data, sitemaps, search reports and analytics. Important pages and downloadable resources are marked so their destinations are accounted for in the new website.

  • Performance baseline

We record available search traffic, landing-page performance and tracked enquiries or sales before the move. The dated baseline also notes tracking gaps and other factors affecting later comparisons.

  • Content decisions

Each important page receives an agreed action: retain, improve, combine or retire. The record identifies what needs carrying across, who approves changes and whether a new destination is required.

  • Redirect mapping

Changed URLs are mapped to suitable new destinations for developer implementation. Pages being retired without a relevant replacement receive a separate handling decision rather than an automatic redirect to the homepage.

  • Developer requirements and launch checks

Your developer receives the agreed SEO requirements, including page settings, URL handling and verification steps. A launch checklist identifies responsibilities and the checks needed around release.

During development and launch

Check the new build and test what reaches the live website.

  • Staging assessment

With approved access to the test website, we compare priority pages and templates against the migration requirements. Findings are recorded with their impact, owner and recommended action.

  • Navigation, internal links, canonicals and structured data

We check that links and page references use the intended live destinations. The assessment also identifies canonical or structured-data details still pointing to old addresses or the staging environment.

  • Redirects and page responses

Old-to-new mappings are tested for destination accuracy, permanent redirect behaviour and unnecessary chains. Important landing pages are checked for errors, empty responses and content that fails to load.

  • Mobile usability and performance

Key templates are assessed on mobile for navigation, readable content and usable enquiry or purchase routes. Performance checks identify significant issues introduced by the new build, with findings assigned to the implementation team.

  • Staging restrictions and live indexing settings

The launch checklist separates protections for the test website from restrictions intended for live pages. We check for staging settings carried into production and confirm the agreed access and indexing directives.

  • Sitemaps and Search Console

We check the new sitemap and relevant Search Console properties. For an eligible domain move, Change of Address is handled after the move and redirects are in place, with the actions recorded.

After launch

Check the live move and work through the issues that appear.

  • Important URL checks

Priority old and new URLs are tested after release. The checks confirm destinations, page content and live settings, while search-engine processing is monitored separately.

  • Crawling, indexing and reported errors

Search Console and repeat website checks help identify inaccessible pages, unexpected exclusions and other problems. Findings are assessed against the agreed migration decisions rather than treating every change in page counts as an error.

  • Comparison with the baseline

Search and enquiry performance is compared across suitable periods. The analysis accounts for changed URLs, seasonality, tracking differences and substantial content changes made during the move.

  • Investigating problems

We investigate missing content, incorrect destinations, technical restrictions and unexpected performance changes. Each finding includes the evidence available and the action needed from us or your developer.

  • Issue register

A shared record tracks each issue, its owner, priority, status and verification. An implemented fix and a later search-engine response are recorded separately when further monitoring is needed.

Different changes, different checks

Plan around what is actually changing.

A new domain, a platform replacement and a visual redesign affect different parts of the website. The migration requirements should reflect those differences. A redesign does not require new URLs. Existing addresses should remain unless there is a practical reason to change them. When several major changes are planned together, we assess whether they should be phased.

Type of changeWhat changesMain areas to check
Domain changeThe website moves to a different domain.URL destinations, redirects, domain access, relevant Search Console actions and important external references.
Platform changeThe system running the website changes.Template output, URL behaviour, content transfer, metadata, structured data and tracking.
URL or navigation restructuringPage addresses, menus or category relationships change.Destination mapping, internal links, important-page access and redirect implementation.
Redesign with substantial content changesLayout, templates or content change, even when URLs stay the same.Retained information, headings, metadata, rendering, mobile use and enquiry routes.
How we work

One migration plan, with responsibilities agreed.

We work alongside your developer or agency so SEO requirements fit into the build and launch schedule.

  1. Assess the website and the move

Understand the current website, planned changes, available data and expected launch arrangements.

  2. Prepare the requirements

Build the URL inventory, content decisions, redirect mapping and technical checklist, with responsibilities assigned.

  3. Check the build and launch

Assess the staging website, prioritise outstanding findings and run the agreed checks after release.

  4. Monitor and resolve

Review the live website, available search data and tracked outcomes. Work through the issue register during the agreed monitoring period.

Measurement and reporting

See what moved, what changed and what needs attention.

Reporting combines implementation checks with search and business performance. The baseline gives those comparisons a starting point.

  1. Priority pages and destinations

Whether important content is present, intended destinations work and the live page settings match the plan.

  2. Redirect and indexing findings

Incorrect destinations, redirect chains, access restrictions and unexpected indexing changes, with their investigation status.

  3. Search performance

Impressions, clicks and relevant landing-page trends compared across suitable periods, accounting for old and new URLs.

  4. Tracked enquiries or sales

Available enquiry or ecommerce data, with any changes to tracking identified before drawing conclusions.

  5. Outstanding actions

Unresolved issues, assigned owners and the next checks needed, including items awaiting search-engine processing.

Planning the move

When should we involve an SEO specialist?

Before the new structure, URLs and content decisions are finalised. That gives your developer requirements to work from. If development is already underway, we assess the current position and prioritise the checks that fit the remaining schedule.

Does every redesign need a migration plan?

The checks should match the changes involved. A visual update with stable URLs needs less mapping than a domain or platform move, but changes to content, templates and navigation still need assessment. We establish the scope before recommending the work.

Do we need to change our URLs when moving platforms?

Not automatically. We first assess whether existing addresses should remain and whether the new platform supports them. Necessary changes are mapped and tested. A new platform alone is not a reason to rename every page.

Will you work with our existing developer or agency?

Yes. We provide the agreed SEO requirements, mapping and checks, then coordinate findings with the people building the website. Implementation responsibilities and launch arrangements are set out at the start.

Access, timing and outcomes

What access do you need?

The assessment normally uses Search Console, analytics, available URL records and staging access. Implementation may also require approved access to the CMS or hosting. We identify the access needed for the agreed work and who is responsible for making each change.

How long does migration SEO take?

The schedule follows the website’s size, planned changes and development timetable. Your proposal sets out the planning stages, launch involvement and post-launch monitoring period. Larger or more complex moves need more time for mapping and verification.

Will rankings and traffic stay the same after launch?

That cannot be guaranteed. Search engines need to process changed pages and URLs, and performance may fluctuate. We plan and check the implementation, then investigate unexpected changes against the baseline and the work completed.

Can you help after a migration has gone wrong?

Yes. We compare the available old-site records with the live website and investigate redirects, missing content, access restrictions and tracking. Keep old URL lists, sitemaps, exports and reports, as they help establish what changed. The findings determine the repair priorities.
